Fiesta Friday #8

So here we go again, it is Friday and time to party.  I have been encouraging other foodies and party goers to enter in to this lovely fiesta atmosphere all over the blog, I am sure Angie will thank me copiously when she sees all the new entries…coughs!

For anyone who follows my blog and sees my Fiesta Friday entries you will note that I have never cooked for this event and though it is not meant to be all about food, it does seem as I mention every week that there are copious food Gods and Godess’s there making me cringe when comparing my culinary skills and hence I post something completely different, but Angie has promised me an Oscar!!!

However, this week I thought I would be brave, maybe its the medication from my back injection that is making me loopylou, can I blame it on that, well I will if you take one look and think OMG I would so not  eat that!

Anyway let’s get on with this it is becoming painful for me stringing it out.  It is NOT my own recipe but by a cook I admire from afar, I have cooked this meal often, why?  Because it is oh so easy.  I did as mentioned before have a little hospital visit and thought also that it would be a good idea to make something ready prepared so the old man who I call ‘shrek’ would only have to reheat it up, and it means that we won’t yet again have pizza!

007I used my  mothers vintage hot/pot/slower cooker, which I love.  I am not sure of what the difference is between hot pot and slow cooker, all seems the same to me?

Here is the recipe:

Boeuf Bourguignon Easy

 1 lb (450 g) or 1 x 500 g pack cubed beef
 1 x 200 g pack Tesco Lightly Smoked Bacon Bits
 4 oz (110g) chestnut mushrooms
 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced
 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced
 1 x 180 g pack Waitrose Borettane Onions in Balsamic Vinegar
 6 sprigs of thyme
 2 bay leaves
 2 heaped tablespoons flour
 15 fl oz (425 ml) red burgundy wine
 salt and freshly milled black pepper
  Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 1, 275°F (140°C).


This is what you might call an all-in-one recipe – just place the first 8 ingredients in a medium-sized flameproof casserole and season well with salt and pepper. Then sprinkle in the flour and, using both hands, toss it all around till everything is lightly coated with flour.

Next pour in the wine, give it a good stir then – ignoring the unpromising sight before you – put a close-fitting lid on the casserole, pop it into the oven on the centre shelf and leave it there for 3 hours, and look forward to the minimum-effort, maximum-result supper that awaits.

To serve, it needs lots of fluffy mashed potato, which you can by all means buy ready-made (but in this case not from Tesco because theirs is poor) and then add extra butter and milk or cream.

I have in the past added other things, like celery, carrots and this time I used dried herbs.  Shrek decided to add macaroni cheese with this,  his Bajaan routes means he cannot resist a bit of macaroni and of course some rice and rather largely sliced carrots on the side (shrek cut these, I take no blame).

Here are some piccies though as true evidence that I did in fact cook this meal.  No angie (fandabbydizzie), I did not get my 11yr old son to cook this..

So there we go, this meal has lasted 3 days LOL…easy peasy and still going strong, I did have a little over the amount of meat given in the recipe before you accuse me of starving my children.

    This week was my first attempt at cooking for the party too – very nervewracking as everyone does it so well! My cakes were pretty edible though, so success for me I think! This looks lovely too – in fact I made a slow cooker beef bourguignon in a very similar fashion yesterday, and it was delicious! I like the idea of adding celery and carrots too – the more veg the merrier in my opinion! I had mine with mashed potato and stir-fried savoy cabbage, kale and spring onion. Yummy!

      Great hehe there is some wine left over! I think I prefer to eat than cook lol but I am due to bake something sweet! I need to see what you’ve been up to!

    Nice change from doggie nether regions Justine 🙂 and hello there – we had the same idea, funny hum? I also made boeuf bourguignon, I also used someone elses recipe, but then it’s a peasant stew so probably within reason whatever root veggies you throw in as long as you keep the onions and the mushrooms, are ok – I am sure some granny somewhere has in the past made the recipe just as you describe!       Hello there lovely lady, yes I love Dehlia Smith, her recipes are traditional and sometimes very easy, I find her food comfort food at times, none of this flashy stuff, the kind of food that when you eat you literally know its there sitting in your stomach doing some good and you wont be hungry again for a good few hours, wow I should be an advocate for her in marketing or something….grins

      I found a few other hot pot recipes, i printed them all off and stuffed them somewhere away safe and now cant find them, will have to have a dig around, one involved baked beans and was called cowboy farty something or rather, i tried it and the males loved it…haha, i wasnt so sure

        hi there – love delia smith too, simple, easy to follow, quite creative at times but with a focus on good, hearty satisfying food, I have a couple of her cookbooks, she has a great vegetarian one, with a recipe for vegetarian “pork” pie, which if I can ever find the energy to make I will try it. Hot pot it is easier. I googled Delia – and beans – I got hits for “yelp like a cowboy” and “bleach-haired skate-punk cowboy” – no other cowboys, you probably made the title up, come on admit it!

      Oh yus I like encouragement. I thought you were being rather quiet and thought maybe you were in shock or horror…grins.

      I am just going through all or some of the entries (so many entries I would be here all day otherwise), printed off the first salad from lisa, looks lovely.

      I am due to bake a cake or fairy cakes I think or something sweet, i am getting that itch, used to do it all the time.

      But it feels odd to post cooking on your fiesta, I feel like I should tell a joke or rip the place up a bit with something….am I a hellraiser ….don’t bother answering that one…grins..I wish!

      So what other encouraging words might you have if I should need more? hehe

        Encore! Encore! That should encourage. Ooh… fairy cakes, that sounds promising. I did pass out a little at the sight of your boeuf. Only coz it looks so tempting! Oh, we’ll take the joke too along with the boeuf. Double entries are allowed for Oscar winners.

          LOL…..well it’s all gone now and I feel sad that my party is over, hehe. Seriously some of these entries must be by professionals, how do they have time to blog? LOL and that includes YOU…are you going to open up a cafe/restaurant or something, you should! Open up here in London then I can come eat your food ;-D deal?

            No, I’m not a pro, but I have reasonable suspicion that some of these entries are done by the pros. I have no idea how they do it. I can barely manage, and you with triple blogs. How do YOU manage?

              I do struggle at times. I often think of merging my pain blog and this one. I am in two minds about it all, sometimes I like to separate it, ie not think about the pain and be my happy self here then sometimes it becomes a right pain in the ass LOL to have to go back and forth. I have more fun on here, but it’s good to get the pain stuff out. My living in east sheen one is my more kinda business one, it gets me in to the local community when having been shut off for so long and also i was maybe one day hoping to get some work for it, desp for a job with my limitations.

              I have one gripe with these entries, I love them to bits, but sometimes when I want to go and print them off, the recipes/methods are printed with pictures that take up about 7 pages, it uses a hell of alot of paper, Its better when people put proper ingredient and method slots tightly together then pics after then one can chose to print page 2 & 3 rather than a whole pack of paper, hah…I want to print off Sweet and Savourys curry but it takes up just too much paper, bummer and i know i will forget otherwise

                That is one good gripe! I didn’t think about that, the papers I mean. Not only that, what about the ink? I should mention this next time. After all, if you’re posting recipes, you’re hoping people will print them out. Girl, you should be an editor. You can do that from home!

    This looks absolutely amazing… I have to dig my crockpot out and give it a try!! I love using my crockpot..especially after working all day to come home to a meal ready to eat!! This would be a wonderful meal to come home to!! Lovely post!! Yum.. 🙂

    I love using my slow cookers (that’s what I call them) and have about 5 different sizes. Yes I do have a lot of storage space and in the past we did a lot of entertaining and one or two of these always came in handy. I enjoy one pot meals and your recipe sounds delicious 🙂

      Wow five? Sheesh I have trouble storing one wow! My mum used to entertain a lot she was a fabulous cook she used to have big parties and I used to serve, I miss those days hehe

      Yes hehe definately gone only so any days around males that boeuf won’t go in their tummies hehe but next time I will save a bowl for you for sure xx
