Blogging Challenge Day 8,9,10,11 & 12

Again doing a round up of the 201 Blogging which though I have done quite a bit of it already, I might or could have done it better and there are extra bits of information spread throughout which has been very helpful, plus a great community spirit.  As usual work from the most recent downwards.

Blogging 201, Day Twelve: Give ‘Em What They Want, Part Two

The best way to learn what readers want is to ask. Create a poll and/or a survey to collect feedback on your site and its content.

Today was about creating and poll and or a survey to get feedback from my readers as to my site and content.

Now I just did a big what are your blogging habits and am writing these posts up which creates awareness of what has been going on.  I think when 201 has finished I shall definitely create hopefully a fun and or interesting poll to get some feedback on my site and content, a great idea.  Polls can be used for so many things and can create great communication between bloggers.

Blogging 201, Day Eleven: Buddy Up

Ready for a longer-term commitment? Find a blogging buddy and create a partnership for mutual support and growth.

For today we are meant to find a blogging buddy and set up things like guest posts and it is working on the theory of promoting each other, helping each other and bringing something new to ones blog.

I think guest posts are a great idea.  I will definitely do this at some stage, however at the moment with my A-Z challenge, plus my 201 Blogging Challenge I simply do not have the time to invest in something that i would like to have a quieter time to organize, however this is definitely something that has been on my mind since before this.

Blogging 201, Day Ten: Support Your Community

Today’s assignment: invest in your community by leaving five comments, adding (or updating) a blogroll, and introducing a comment policy.

In this assignment we are meant to leave five comments on someone else’s blog, create and put up a blogroll and introduce a comment policy.

I already have a comment/copyright & re-blog policy throughout all my blogs which is on a text widget.  As most of you know I comment regularly and did go to Freshly pressed to see what was going on there and with the A-Z challenge one is meant to blog hop 5 blogs a day, I was doing 10 to catch up, so that part more than covered.

As far as a blog roll is concerned, I have never been a fan.  I feel that I do quite a bit of networking already, cross referencing other peoples blogs in my posts, but I relented be it temporary just to see what it looked like.

I personally feel that blog rolls can make a blog look messy and also distract from the actual post that someone has written.  I find when there is a blog roll that my eyes drift to the faces etc when I am reading the post.  Maybe that is because I am nosy, or do you do that too?

How do you feel the blog roll is on my blog, is it distracting, better without? I would love feedback/comments on this.

Blogging 201, Day Nine: Make Your Home a Hub

Today’s assignment: create a page or section on your blog to display links to your online presence elsewhere — and make sure other sites you use reflect your brand.

In today’s assignment we were meant to create a page to display links to our online presence elsewhere and with this to keep up the branding.

I have made a page on my top header which has my Flickr and Pinterest directly linked up to those sites so that when you go to the page you are directly there, rather than having to click a button.  With regards to Facebook and Twitter, these are displayed on my sidebar on my Living in East Sheen blog, rather than a page as I see no point with it being directly infront of one when you click on my blog and too many names up in the header can make it messy.  So that is my assignment hopefully done 🙂

Blogging 201, Day Eight: Create a Social Schedule

Today’s assignment: create a 30-day plan for how you’ll grow your presence (and your blog) on the social network you selected yesterday.

In this assignment day we were to open up different social media sites, using our brand across and being active on them.  The idea being not to just open them up and have them sit there with WordPress linked up posting what you post on your blog on to the various sites, but to actually go to them, look up other like minded people, comment, share, write new things on these social media sites and to work out a calender for it.

For me, I only feel I need the social media with my Living in East Sheen blog and this is linked up to Facebook which I am niggly with as I can’t link up to my page and personal profile for Eclectic, it can only be one or the other and i have a mix and match of people either liking one or joining the  other so I have to manually post from one to the other to make sure everybody has everything.

I have however branded across this and twitter which is not integrated on to my Living in East Sheen page, not that I really have used Twitter yet, but I plan on dedicating one day that I will spend some time updating doing things on there.  I also have Instagram for my fun photos and Flickr for my more ‘serious’ photos which I have linked up on all my blogs on a page now, instead of a follow button.  These are also branded 🙂

As always thank you for reading!

Good work, good decisions! It’s the same with me for most of the points you mention. As to the blogroll, I didn’t put it in the sidebar because there is really no space for it, I just made a separate page for the blogroll. As to the blogging buddies, this was a new idea and an attractive one for me, but like you say, right now is not the best time with the challenges running.

Ah a good idea to put it on a page though there’s no widget for that so alor of work right to out each person in and then you have to keep it up to date etc? X

    • April 27, 2014 at 5:49 PM

I’m probably going to remove my blog roll! What are your thoughts? Is it distracting?

      • April 27, 2014 at 6:01 PM

Honestly, it is distracting. I’m interested in your interests, so I’d love it if you put your blogroll on a page, but you’re right, you’d have to do the heavy lifting yourself, there’s no widget for it. I only made a brief blogroll like this:

        • April 27, 2014 at 6:10 PM

Thanks I have taken it off, is there anything else that is distracting? I appreciate honest comments 🙂

          • April 27, 2014 at 6:16 PM

Much better and cleaner without the blogroll! Just one more thing, if I may, I don’t perfectly get the last two widgets in the right sidebar: “Go unplug” and “Did you like my blog”. It’s probably me being dumb, but what does it mean? Is it just decorative or what am I missing? It’s not that I don’t like it, I just don’t get it 😳

            • April 27, 2014 at 6:26 PM

It’s just a picture, it doesn’t go anywhere. One is to remind people to unplug, which means take some time out from blogging and internet stuff. The other one is a pun on words, ie who is there? Ie who is looking at my blog and the title says Did you like my blog? I only recently put them up, I don’t mind taking them down, was just playing around, you think they should go? The only thing I find with my theme is if it is a long post which many of mine seem to be, when the side bar runs out ie nothing else is there, there is just my text with huge gaps at the side and it looks a bit odd. Kind of like a picture without a frame, know what I mean?

              • April 27, 2014 at 6:30 PM

Ah, I see 🙂 I didn’t get the pun, I suspected that it would be something like this. No need to put it down, why?!

Yes, it’s right that there are empty sidebars on the screen when you read a long post, but that’s ok with me, I’m used to it. Normally, this space would be probably filled with ads and such things on commercial sites, so it’s pleasant to give one’s eyes some rest.

Overall, your blog looks perfect the way it is, so there’s no need for any tweaking any more 😉 Just keep on writing!

                • April 27, 2014 at 6:34 PM

hehe ok, i guess with some peoples themes they have a background which runs down the side that normally has some kind of pattern, that is why it looks odd to me. I have moved one of the pics to the other side, but you think ok to keep the two still? I really want to just keep essential info i suppose on the sides, so maybe it shouldnt be there, its not reallya place for fun? lol

                  • April 27, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Hm. I wouldn’t go for a pattern background here, it would be perhaps too busy. I don’t think the “empty” sidebars a problem at all!

OK, now just an idea, what about removing the owl (boo, it’s a cute owl though!) and keeping just the Unplug picture while at the same time moving it to the left (where the owl now is), so that both sidebars would be approximately of the same length?

Sidebars are for serious and fun stuff as well! It’s good that you have the important stuff at the top of the sidebars and the pictures at the bottom.

                    • April 27, 2014 at 7:28 PM

Yes exactly I did think to put all the info at the top! I will take off mr owl…cries….just joking! I will do as you suggest and look and I do really appreciate your feedback it’s importantly to me esp from you hehe x

                    • April 27, 2014 at 7:41 PM

You don’t need to do what I tell you, I was just thinking, you know… And sometimes I’m overthinking! The point is: I love your blog 😀

        Likewise… 😀

  3. April 27, 2014 at 7:15 PM

About polls and surveys. I really don’t get much information I don’t already know from either one of them. My best feedback comes from stats, personal notes or my comments section. But polls are so much fun.

Blog rolls don’t work for me either. It is random and I don’t want anything on my blog I can’t control. The blog roll does not always fit in with my point of view. I have my favorite dozen bloggers and might make a page highlighting them. I also have guest bloggers and I’ve written posts for other bloggers – it is all part of being part of the community and forming real blogging friendships/partnerships.

At the end of the night, for me, blogging is all about being creative and having fun. It is about entertaining and informing and sharing information. It is about creating a place readers will want to come back to again and again.

    • April 27, 2014 at 7:31 PM

I couldn’t have said it better myself you mirror my sentiments entirely. Having only blogged since jan I havnt done things like polls and guest blogs but it’s definitely on a to do list 🙂
