Weekly Photo Challenge: New

This weeks photo challenge from WordPress is New, and I would like to announce that I am awestruck, so in love!

YUP, this is my gossip, I finally got a DSLR, wohhooo, I am so awestruck I have only just opened it since getting it at Christmas. ย Not because I didn’t appreciate it, simply because yus I was a little frightened, now I have this amazing thing to learn how to use, but I am very, very excited.

I am also trialling the Corel Paintshop Pro X7 which I uploaded today, this is my first experiment with it.

So I present to you here my very new, shiny, brand spanking new:-

Nikon D3300 Double Zoom Kit

Nikon D3300

Nikon D3300

So watch this space!

I have already found a days photography course at our local Wetlands Centre which I am going to ring up about tomorrow, so very excited indeedy.

I would also like to thank Cardinal Guzman who very kindly donated to anyone who wishes to use, a selection of fabulous images he made for the Weekly Photo Challenge insignia which is on my featured images, if you want to see the whole selection please click here – Cardinal Guzman

Also my tea-time extravaganza is this Tuesday coming, if you fancy joining me on this fun Tea Party blog hop make sure to pop by my blog then, if you wish to find out more about it, please click here – Tea Time with Justine.

PS you don’t have to be a wonderful cook to participate it can be photography, poetry, anything really one might bring to ‘Tea’

I would love to know what photo editing software and filing/storage system you use, and have used, and what your opinions are of them as I am in the process of trialling and trying to decide what to use.

Thank you for reading, Justine xxx

Filing system? What filing system?! Where’s the fun if you’re not feverishly trawling through mountains of folders listed by date that you don’t have a clue what they contain?! It’s all part of the fun and mystery lol ๐Ÿ˜‰ xx

It would take days and days of effort to label all of them and designate them to folders and then I reckon I’d STILL have trouble finding them lol xx

I have a Nikon as well. An older D60 (10mp) that I bought in 2009 – ancient by today’s standards but it still serves me well.

Nice! I have the D7100 and love it. I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC. You can get both programs for $10 a month from Adobe. I don’t know what it would be in Britain however. But since I shoot RAW, they are the best programs. Lots to learn with a new camera. Take it off of what I call Dummy Mode, as soon as possible and start learning to shoot. Best of luck and have fun!

Yes I think lightroom etc is around that price here. I loved the editing on lightroom but found the filing way over my head, i did find it confusing but prob need to spend more time on it, but my trial ran out before I had time to do so with everything being crazy during Xmas. I am trialling Corel right now so will enjoy the editing there and spend a bit more time before making the final decision. I will make a note about the dummy mode for sure, currently reading up on some photography thingsi found on an app which is quite good, the photography course i wanted is booked which is a bummer so shall have to find another xxx

Congrats on the new toy, use it in good health ๐Ÿ˜Š. I’m a Nikon shooter myself, I have 2 D300s with a full suite of fabulous lenses which are actually more important than the camera! The best advice I can give you as a professional is you DEFINITELY want to have a good filing system. The more you shoot the more you’ll need it. I’d recommend Lightroom for several reasons. It’s the most popular so there are lots of tutorials, it’s not in danger of being phased out (like Aperture is), and it’s very nicely integrated with Photoshop. You might think about a class on it also. Good luck!!

ah thank you for your good advice. I did trial lightroom but at the wrong time of year, ie Christmas, so didn’t get much time to set aside for it. I loved the editing side but the filing went way over my head, i found it terribly confusing and ended up losing photos etc etc… It would be great to have an ‘actual’ lesson in person on it lol, rather than trying to do it through you tube, i did try that for a couple of hours. Currently I file on my computer in folders and am learning to be more organized ie actually dating them and labels etc, before it was totally ad hoc and i learn’t my lesson when my hard drive went on my computer and i lost some pics. I am trialling corel photoshop X7 at the mo, just started yesterday, I know its only editing for them, unlike lightroom, so lots to consider ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you so much for your help too xx

Woo hoo!! How exciting!! Congrats, you will love it. I am addicted to my camera and take it everywhere.
As you know, i use Lightroom for editing and storage. I have over 22,000 pgotos all stored on a 4TB cloud drive. When i import the photos into LR, they go into folders arranged by month. I then export the edited photos to separate folders.
I want to do a LR class sometime soon. X

oh yes i am excited and nervous lol. The course i wanted to do is booked up which is a shame, the next one we are away for so i shall have to see if there is something else around. Wow that is a lot of photos. So you use icloud for storage or how do you do it? You duplicate your storage on lightroom and off lightroom then too? xx

I have a Western Digital Cloud Drive. It’s just an external hard drive with wifi. You plug it into your modem so that you can access it from multiple devices. My MacBookPro hard drive is too small for all my photos so I was forced to get organised.
When I import photos off my camera, I import them straight into Lightroom which stores them on my cloud drive (in that month’s folder). Lightroom has a single library file on my Mac hard drive – this file keeps track of where all the photos are stored.
Good point about duplication, I need to make sure I’ve backed everything up. What a disaster that would be!!

wow, that went over my head the Western Digital Cloud Drive, but it sounds good, wow you are sooo mega organized.

It sounds really good though, being able to access it anywhere, makes total sense, I had not heard of it so maybe i should look it up.

OMG thats amazing your camera downloads staright in to lightroom then in to the relevant month on your cloud, did that take up alot of setting up to do? I am so non techy, i don’t think I would know where to start.

Gosh I just went cross eyed haha xx

Congratulations and it’s a Nikon – great choice!

I have 79,000 images in my main library in Aperture 3, dreading the point later this year when Apple abandon my favourite app. I also have a sub to Adobe Creative Cloud so use Photoshop cc. And I have the Nik (now Google) suite of filters including wonders such as Color Efex Pro, Analog Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro.

And the best part, my Mac Book Pro which although heading towards five years old now is the best laptop I have ever owned

And don’t even ask about my camera(s) or I will bore you and your readers to death….

Oh go on please do share all your cameras with us as I am sure you have a few.

      Wow 79,000 images..omg…faints.

Now what is a sub, sorry I just don’t know all this technical language, I guess I will get it in the end.

So photoshop is just an editing extention that adobe makes, not a filing system right?

The google filters are something you pay for I guess that only works with Adobe?

      I don’t have a Mac but wish I did ๐Ÿ™‚

At the moment I just file my photos on my pics section on my computer but finally am labelling and dating them which I wasn’t doing before. xx

Well, ok. I have two cameras, my oldest being my trusty analogue Olympus OM10, currently sitting here with a roll of Ilford Delta 3200 inside it and looking at me and making me feel guilty for not cherishing it more. It was my first real camera and I love it, I had it refurbished when I lived in Belgrade and there are a few shots on the belgradestreets.com that were taken on real film.

And I can still, remember how disdainful I was of digital some years ago…

My “real” camera is my Nikon D700 with which I am also totally in love. It is the fourth Nikon I have owned. I had film based F65 and F80 and then exchanged them for a D70. The D70 survives but I should never have PX’d the F80 it was a wonderful camera.

I also use my iPhone a lot.

The sub is the subscription that I pay to Adobe so I can install all their products on my Mac, point at them and say look, and then hardly ever use them. As my life changes I may need to reconsider such heinous acts of profligacy.

The Nik Google package I bought when they were not part of Google, I don’t know what the price is now, but I use them all the time, they are plugins that work with Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom.

Photoshop is an editor and also a creative painting tool, it doesn’t organise but is linked to Abode Bridge which does,bt I don’t like it.

I use Aperture to organise, label etc…and sometimes I organise well and other times not so.

Hope that covers it all ๐Ÿ™‚

Time for a glass of wine now.

wow I think you deserve a glass of wine after all that hehe.

i was clearing out a big old desk the other day and found the bottom drawer full of old cameras, video recording machines etc etc, its a shame we don’t use them anymore.

I read a great article which i must post the other day on the first camera which was just a box, some people apparently still use them to this day ;D

I am trialling corel at the moment and actually really enjoying it, it seems to be pretty comprehensive, still yet to work my way through it xx
