An Open Letter To WordPress

A pretty succinct opinion on recent changes

Fish Of Gold

Dear WordPress.com,

I am loath to write yet another letter to you, since I typically prefer to spend my time writing actual blog posts, but I’ve been bitching on Twitter and in your forums to no avail, so maybe you’ll pay attention to a blog post. It’s not likely, but hey, you never know.

Please, stop. Just put down whatever you’re working on and stop with the futzing. You have been tinkering under my hood long enough and you know what? None of the “improvements” you’ve made are actually improvements.

Below, you will find explanations as to why your improvements aren’t improvements sorted conveniently by feature.

Post Editor

Let’s talk about this “Beep beep boop” post editor nightmare with less than half the functionality of the old editor. Thankfully, you haven’t taken away the old editor yet. However, I fully expect that one day, I will go to write a…

Thank you for sharing, I think less than half of my readers are even seeing my posts lately, the notifications are inconsistent, I get sent to spam and some of my already-approved commenters are being sent to spam. Arrgghhh!!

Thanks for reblogging this — I’ve reblogged it too, as well as a post about the Mister Linky widget problem and yet ANOTHER post from ANOTHER blogger about these stupid “updates” and “improvements”. Thankfully — this guy tells you EXACTLY how to bookmark the pages to old notifications, old “create new post”, old reader, old “all posts” page, etc. SO HELPFUL. You might want to check it out — !

I bookmarked it, put it on my ‘bar’ and will use it from now on!
I’ve also saved both your link here and the one from Justine to read when I can.

Quite welcome! And thank YOU for using those links. 🙂

My “bookmarks” bar is now half taken up with these links for Blog It Or Lose It AND MindLoveMisery! But hey — not going to give ’em a single “click” on the NEW pages if I can help it. 😉

AND … just in case … I’m test-driving a blog at Blogger. If I’m going to say, “be good or I’ll leave” I’d better have something to back my words up with. 😉

I have that back-up. I’ve had issues there too. They have no notifications at all unless you follow every single comment your readers do not know when you reply to them. I don’t know if it is different if you actually follow someone else but I don’t follow that many folks at all. I know this; if I post a comment at B and the post author replies – it doesn’t come to my in-box. I have to go to the site and look. I don’t believe there is any nesting of comments either for a conversation so to speak. But then maybe you’ll learn things I haven’t bothered with.

I have B and I and leave it open so mainly I can comment at both places without having to jump through hoops since the two don’t play nice together. I wouldn’t jump ship just yet.

But if you find a third option… That maybe has the best of both. Only B is through G, which makes it easy that way. And even though I haven’t paid any premiums a WP… I’m used to how I’ve been doing things for a few years now. So maybe ‘they’ can iron out the idiocy?

I’ve got an information page I’m going to put the notifications link on – or maybe put up a new page for the info about the ‘saves’.

I’m not sure I understand all the links. But I’m operating out of the old system 97% of the time in regards to my copy, paste and post and I don’t use the new edit at all (except once I made a mistake and used the quick edit -never again!!!) – as where I don’t have extra spaces between lines. Some of the changes I can live with.

It was so nice this morning to come to the old Notification and work from here/there.

Thanks again. Getting a new system I think would really be a pain as so many still operate out of the two popular choices. Ack I’ve written another book… 🙂

            No worries!

Glad you cant figure out notifications at Blogger either. Georgia and i were talking about that. She doesn’t know either..

I should write to Blogger – tell them that WP is messing up big time – and if they can get a good notifications system people will jump ship from wp to bg by the thousands!!!

When I was green behind the gills… (OK I sort of still am) I clicked the notify me on every thing at B. Chock full o’ mailbox. I even got people who commented currently on a post that was over six months old. I finally figured out how to undo that. I just seems to be a real pain to have to do that with every post you are interested in. So I just don’t. I’ve tried to inform folks at B that if they respond to a comment it might be better to just e-mail the person – since we don’t get it – the reply. You do get notices if someone comments on your post – just not any reply notices. And there is no chance a continued conversation. At least when the blog at WP has reached its limit of nesting, you can still go to the notifications (if it is still there and add to the conversation.

‘G’ has it’s issues too. Always updating. I am used to the way I am doing things and didn’t want the ‘new drive update’ which another friend did look at and basically said ‘ick’. Not any one system is perfect. If you can commune and communicate with B do let us know.

I’d still keep at least one WP account for ease of commenting. Why can’t the ‘Big Companies play nice?

Why can’t they play nice? Money! Just follow the money. WP figures there’s money in tablets and mobiles hence our current problems.

                G always updating? Ick.

Honestly, though, I just don’t have the time to relearn blogging all over again. It was feeling nice and comfortable the way it was — allowing me more time to be creative. Ugh.

I’m right there with you… I want more creative time and less figuring out the steps. I will be the first to admit I never did follow those ten steps. I got to where I could do what I wanted and stopped. And now there is just enough time to do my dailies that I’ve been doing for years on end and a few fun prompts.

National Poetry Month in April is nice and all… but there isn’t anything local here. And I’m not sure if I can follow just one prompt for a whole month besides the stuff I want to do.

If I knew anything about photo stuff… I just might be dangerous. 🙂 Maybe I’ll be able to take some kind of class or get a tutor over the summer. How much would you charge for a few hours? 😉

Ah, but going in the back door is sometimes the best way to learn 😉

They used to offer those ten steps when you first started up a WP Blog… not sure if they still do?

Cake!!! Now there is a magic word. 😉

I kinda am used to how I use WP. As long as I don’t fat-finger something – I’m OK.
The only real thing that was messing me up was the new notification system.

I figured out most of what I wanted on my own. Having a few different blogs in the same system kind of makes navigation a challenge. But I’ve done OK so far.

By the way… cake is not a laughing matter 🙂

Seeing as it is 4 am for me… I’ll have to come back to this.
But I did go to the Link Jen provided and copied the notifications link, bookmarked it on my bar and will use it from now on!

I dislike that they took away the archive. You can’t see past three days. And I refuse to get ‘likes’ notifications e-mailed. As I think my e-mail inbox is crowded enough. But then I don’t allow likes on my post either and the only way I see my likes is through the ‘notifications’ which won’t show me all of them passed a certain amount. It says to see them all to go to the post, where they aren’t because I took them away. All these ‘likes’ drive me nuts. Put in a 🙂 or a few words please. Or give us the option to take away a ‘like’ that is really a link to an ad (like I need shoes or hair weaving?) that has nothing to do with how we want to operate our sites. That’s mainly why I have banned the ‘likes’ from my posts!

Thanks for your visit. I’m glad we can share information. The notifications are really flaky. They show up first in your in-box and then in your comment section at WP before getting to the actual notifications drop. I think it used to be the other way around you’d get the star first, then the comment in WP then to your e-mail inbox. Such a royal pain in the …well we all know where.

yes i have just tried to cut down my emails, they have gone crazy i ignored them for a day or so it got overwhelming. I don’t have messages from wp or anything now to my email, i figure i can read them on the app or direct etc, no need for email.

We will get there sorting out to make wp work for us as we would ilke it i am sure x
